How salary conversion works

Every pay period can be converted through the annual amount. An hourly wage becomes annual pay by multiplying it by the hours you work each week and the number of weeks you work in a year. The annual figure is then divided to get monthly, weekly or daily pay.

The common benchmark is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, which is 2,080 hours a year. A wage of 25 an hour therefore equals 52,000 a year, about 4,333 a month and 1,000 a week.

How to use this salary calculator

  1. Enter your pay and choose whether it is hourly, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or annual.
  2. Set your hours per week, days per week and weeks worked per year. Lower the weeks if you take unpaid leave.
  3. Optionally enter an estimated tax rate to see a rough take-home amount.
  4. Press Calculate to see your pay in every period.

Gross pay vs take-home pay

The figures are gross, which means before tax and deductions. The optional tax rate applies one flat percentage, which is only a rough guide because real tax systems use bands, allowances and deductions. Check your payslip or a local tax tool for exact take-home pay.

Comparing job offers

  • Convert both offers to the same period, usually annual or hourly, before comparing.
  • Compare the hours as well as the pay. A higher salary with longer hours can pay less per hour.
  • Count benefits such as health cover, bonuses, paid leave and pension contributions.
  • Include commuting time and cost, because they reduce what the job is really worth.
