What a case converter does
A case converter changes the capital letters in a piece of text without retyping it. That solves everyday annoyances, such as a paragraph typed with caps lock on, a headline that needs title case, a spreadsheet column in mixed styles or a variable name that has to follow a coding convention. One click turns the text into the style you need.
This tool offers twelve styles. Writers use UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, Sentence case and Capitalize Each Word. Developers use camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case and CONSTANT_CASE. For fun and emphasis there are aLtErNaTiNg and iNVERSE case.
How to use the case converter
- Type or paste your text into the top box.
- Press the button for the style you want. The result appears in the box below.
- Press Copy result to copy it, or Download .txt to save it as a file.
- Press another style to try again. The original text in the top box stays unchanged.
Title case vs sentence case
Sentence case capitalizes only the first word of each sentence and proper names, like normal writing. Title case capitalizes the main words of a headline. Style guides differ on the details, but most agree that short words such as a, an, the, and, but, or, for, of, in, on and to stay lowercase unless they are the first or last word. This converter follows that common rule.
Use title case for article headlines, book titles and headings if your style guide asks for it, and sentence case for body text, subheadings, buttons and interface labels, where it reads more naturally. Always check proper nouns, acronyms and brand names afterwards, because any automatic tool can miss exceptions such as iPhone or NASA.
Case styles used in programming
- camelCase: the first word is lowercase and each later word starts with a capital, as in userName. Common for variables and functions in JavaScript and Java.
- PascalCase: every word starts with a capital, as in UserName. Common for class and component names.
- snake_case: words are lowercase and separated by underscores, as in user_name. Common in Python, Ruby and database columns.
- kebab-case: lowercase words separated by hyphens, as in user-name. Common in URLs, CSS classes and file names.
- CONSTANT_CASE: uppercase words with underscores, as in MAX_USER_COUNT. Common for constants and environment variables.
Tips for accurate results
- Convert a copy of important text, so you can always go back to the original.
- After using title case or sentence case, scan for names, acronyms and brand names that need their own capitalization.
- For code styles, the tool splits words on spaces, symbols and existing capital letters, so userName and user name both work as input.
- Numbers and symbols stay unchanged. Accented letters are converted correctly.
Capitalization rules in everyday writing
Capitalize the first word of a sentence, proper names, the pronoun I and the days and months in English. Style guides disagree on headlines: some capitalize every major word, others capitalize only the first word and proper names. Pick the rule your publication uses and apply it consistently. Writing whole sentences in capital letters is harder to read and is often taken as shouting, so use it sparingly.
