What is a URL slug?

A slug is the readable last part of a web address, such as word-counter in https://example.com/tools/word-counter. It tells people and search engines what the page is about before they open it. A good slug is short, descriptive and easy to read aloud, while a bad slug is a string of numbers, capital letters or symbols.

Most content systems create a slug from your title automatically, but the result is often too long or contains filler words. This generator lets you create the slug yourself, preview it and adjust it, so you can paste a clean slug into WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or your own code.

2. Pick a separator: a hyphen is recommended for web addresses.

Slug best practices for SEO

• Use lowercase letters. Web servers can treat upper and lower case as different addresses.
• Separate words with hyphens, not underscores. Google recommends hyphens because it reads them as word separators.
• Keep it short and focused on the main keyword, usually three to five words.
• Leave out dates, numbers and words that will go out of date, unless they are part of the topic.
• Remove accents and special characters, so the address is easy to type and share.
• Do not change the slug of a page that already ranks without adding a 301 redirect from the old address.

How this generator cleans text

The generator first converts accented letters to their plain forms, so cafe with an accent becomes cafe. It turns the ampersand into the word and, removes every character that is not a letter or a number, collapses repeated separators and trims them from the ends. If you ask for a maximum length, it cuts at a word boundary where possible, so you do not end up with half a word.

Remove common words is optional. It deletes words such as a, the, of and for when other words remain, which shortens the slug without changing its meaning. Keep them when they matter, as in a title like Lord of the Rings.

Slugs outside English

This tool turns letters with accents into plain Latin letters. Scripts such as Arabic, Chinese or Cyrillic have no simple Latin equivalent, so characters that cannot be converted are removed. For those languages, write a short English or transliterated slug yourself, or use the slug system built into your content platform.

Where to paste a slug

In WordPress the slug is the Permalink field in the post settings. In Shopify it is the URL handle in the search engine listing section. Webflow, Squarespace and most other builders have a similar field under SEO or page settings. In code frameworks such as Next.js, a slug is usually a file name or a field in your content. Remember that after a page is live and indexed, changing the slug means setting up a 301 redirect from the old address.
